Meta releases LLAMA 2! Validation of OpenLLM France's mission.
“Reaction from the OpenLLM France community to the publication of LLAMA 2 by META".”
OpenLLM France, the leading initiative in the field of sovereign and open source multimodal generative AI, welcomes Meta's recent decision to release the new version of its flagship LLM with the possibility of using it for commercial applications, highlighting the open source nature of LLAMA 2.
OpenLLM France congratulates Meta on taking this important step, which underlines the importance of Open Source in the development of generative AI. This move by Meta validates our conviction that the future of AI must be built on transparency and sharing, based on the founding principles of free software.
Meta's decision validates our ambition at OpenLLM France. We have always maintained that Open Source is the way forward to ensure the sustainable development and equitable adoption of AI technologies.
However, as OSI recently pointed out on the morning of Meta's announcement https://twitter.com/OpenSourceOrg/status/1681363091009986560?ref_src=twsrc^tfw, many "made in the US" Open Source initiatives are often accompanied by licensing restrictions. This raises questions about the true "freedom" offered by these so-called Open Source initiatives.
For example, the user license specifies : “You will not use the Llama Materials or any output or results of the Llama Materials to improve any other large language model (excluding Llama 2 or derivative works thereof).”
Prohibiting derivative works contradicts one of the fundamental freedoms of Open Source. So let's be clear: Llama 2 cannot be said to be truly Open Source.
As a result, OpenLLM France's commitment to developing sovereign and truly Open Source multimodal generative AI has never been more crucial. Sovereignty and Open Source, including for datasets, are sine qua non conditions for creating the trust needed to adopt these technologies.
All in all, we see Meta's approach as a first step in the right direction. Nevertheless, we invite them to get closer to our OpenLLM France initiative, and to work closely with our community of experts, particularly in the Open Source field.
In concrete terms, we're inviting Meta, and in particular Yann Lecun, to join us at our next "Meet-up" in early September, so that we can explore ways of working together.
